the boat was in very good condition when we purchased it in 1996 but it had been used regularly and the foam in the mattresses and beds had lost its spring. Canvas on deck was weathered and it was designed for the calm seas of western Florida.
Based on a recommendation we selected Pacific Coast Canvas in Alameda Ca. for our interior and exterior work. They first made a sail cover for our full batten main with Dutchman system. It was very good quality so we engaged them to replace all interior upholstery and add an offshore dodger with shade attachment and weather cloths around the cockpit lifelines and stern pulpit.
Their work was very impressive and there was no surprises on price and they even did a few extra things at no charge. They offered us the opportunity to bring the boat back after we finish building it out to refit the weather cloths around new gear and antennas at no cost. They completed this work while we went to lunch.
They make a very unique bed from layered foam that is very comfortable. It is far less expensive than a custom inner-spring mattress.
We strongly recommend Pacific Coast Canvas if you are interested in high quality work at a fair price. Our only reservation is that they are busy so you must book in advance and sometimes work ran late but the boat was always ready to sail on the weekend (the big job took several weeks) and they have great customer service.
11/30/97 Update - Now that we are underway with 1600 miles under our keel we wanted to give a perspective on how the canvas is working out. The dark color we chose gets hot in the sun and doing it over we may have gone with lighter colors topside. The configuration of our canvas is great and we strongly recommend the weathercloths around the cockpit, this helps keep the cockpit dry. The shade cover that comes off of our dodger to a pole on the backstays has stayed up at anchor and under sail with winds up to 25 knots. Above that it flaps and we take down. It comes down very easy so we prefer this configuration to a bimini.
