Club Profile

The Rotary Club of Santo is a small, informal club of modest means but big ambitions.  We are a diverse group with an even mix of local "Ni-Vanuatu" citizens and expatriate business people.  Our diversity gives us high credibility in the community and allows us to both tap the resources of the community and direct their use most effectively.  Vanuatu is a UN defined "Least Developed Nation" so we also receive considerable help from outside Rotary clubs and Rotary International and we help ensure that this input is well utilized.

We meet weekly at 7:30 PM for dinner at the Deco Stop Lodge.  Our meeting usually lasts 1 1/2 hours.  We really enjoy guests at our meeting.  Come prepared to tell us about your club and home.

Vanuatu is a nation that can use a lot of help.  Because it is a place friendly to the west it doesn't receive as much attention as other world hot spots but help here is really appreciated.

Vanuatu has unusually strong ties to the United States.  James Michener wrote "Tales of the South Pacific" while stationed on Santo during World War II.  Pappy Boyington of Black Sheep fame flew from Santo.  Over 500,000 US troops passed through here during the war.

When talking to older Ni-Vanuatu they speak very fondly of the Americans.  They comment on the fact that the US Army had black officers and black men in positions of responsibility and they point to this as one of their inspirations for an independent nation.

The Santo Rotary Club would like to work together with Rotary clubs from around the world to help improve the lives of the people of Vanuatu.
