Water Tanks
Santo Rotary has established safe drinking water as a key goal for 2004 and
2005. Many rural villages in the Santo island middle bush suffer from
tainted drinking water from rivers and streams. The water is slightly
polluted by cattle and other villages up stream. It leads to illness
within the village but the very young have the most problems and many children
die of
Diarrhea
when they become sick from the water and fail to receive treatment quickly.
Santo Rotary has found that
installing a water tank
between 1,000 and 2,000 liters and some roofing to collect rainwater provides an
efficient and inexpensive solution to this problem. A small tank is
sufficient because the village uses it only for drinking water and not cooking
or cleaning water.
We are looking for clubs to donate
the funds for a water system in a village.
Each system can be different
but the costs usually run between $800 and $1,000 AUD or $700 to $850 USD.
If your club is interested in sponsoring a water system we will provide
specifics on a village and we will then provide pictures of the installation when
complete if possible. Some of these villages are so remote that the tank
and equipment will be carried in by hand over 2 days. In these cases we
may not get pictures. We just delivered the tank
donated by the Rotary Club of Maryborough Victoria. Check out this
adventure.
Waterfront Park Development
Santo Rotary has adopted a waterfront area and is rehabilitating into a
community park. This is very important for the community because the
Ni-Vanuatu culture is closely tied with the sea but residents of Luganville that
are from other islands have no family land on the water. This park is
intended to provide these people with a place to go with the family and enjoy
the benefits of a day at the sea.
Hospital Equipment
Rotary has an ongoing
project to provide the hospital with badly needed medical equipment and
supplies. Working with Rotary clubs around the world, we organize the
shipping and delivery of medical equipment and supplies that are badly needed by
our under funded hospital system. We bring in about 1 container per year
of equipment and supplies donated by hospitals, foundations, governments and
Rotary clubs themselves. Sometimes it has been known to arrive by more
unconventional transportation.

We handle the shipping logistics and also provide the needs assessment on
this side.
Currently we need to improve the diagnostic equipment in our main hospital.
Our x-ray equipment is very poor and we only have a small ultrasound for
prenatal check-ups. We would like to get clubs to assist us if they have
access to organizations that can help arrange for this type of equipment.
We always need uniforms, gloves, syringes, wheelchairs, crutches etc.
Cans Collection
Our club collects
aluminum cans in town and crushes them and returns the to Australia for sale as
scrap. This is our primary method of raising money. It is tedious
and we don't make a lot but we are not a wealthy community and this has proven
to be our most reliable and best method.
The freight is donated and we get quite a bit of money from one container but
we only ship a container once every 2 years.
