Location Vanuatu is well located off the coast of Australia and between the regional economic centers of Fiji and New Zealand. The location should represent a significant advantage for Vanuatu but it has not been able to realize this advantage due to the high cost of Transportation and the isolationist policies of excessive duties and unfriendly foreign policy practiced by the government. Vanuatu is primarily known only to the people of the South Pacific and Australia and New Zealand. Americans know that James Michener's "Tales of the South Pacific" was written in this region but virtually no American has even heard of Vanuatu, much less realize that Santo was the center of the book. Fiji is located only 500 km from Vanuatu and it receives 5 wide body jets per week from North America but Vanuatu averages barely more than a dozen tourists per week from there.
